Artists

Yu Seto, Kensei Shimoda
A joint exhibition by Yu Seto, who makes terra-cotta animals and Kensei Shimoda, who makes creatures out of glass. Terra-cotta, meaning baked earth in Italian, is a technique with a long history and has been used for bricks and roof tiles. Seto, who is a graduate student at Tokyo University of the Arts, first encountered terra-cotta as an undergraduate and felt the technique, with its manipulation of clay, was perfect for bringing animals to life. For this exhibition, Seto chose the theme “water”. Shimoda studied glasswork at Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts and currently belongs to Toyama Glass Studio. Shimoda takes advantage of the transparency of glass and uses color to bring to life humorous and adorable creatures such as frogs, goldfish, snails, and more.
