In the winter of 1941, with the intent of cheering up her daughter who was ill with a cold, Astrid Lindgren created tales of a beautiful girl and her adventures. This was the birth of Pippi Longstockings. In 1945, at the end of World War II, a book about the world’s strongest girl Pipi was published and gained popularity amongst children all over the world and 70 years continues to be read.
Over 200 items and original art of the Pippi, Little Lotta, and the Children of Noisy Village series from Sweden, Denmark, and Estonia will be exhibited, many for the first time in Japan. Original video specially made for the exhibition and a large-scale model of Pippi’s house will be shown. The daily life, coexistence with nature, raising children, and other aspects of Lindgren’s home country Sweden will be on exhibit.
Over her 94 years, Astrid Lindgren created many works aimed at children, always protecting the rights of children and creating works full of humor. This exhibit will introduce the life and work of Lindgren who was known as the “queen of children’s books”.
