The World Press Photo 2018, features award-winning photographs by 42 photographers in eight categories. Marking the 61st anniversary of the contest, 4,548 photographers participated from 125 countries and regions, the total number of entries reaching 73,044 this year. The World Press Photo Exhibition travels to 100 venues including Japan, receiving approximately 4 million visitors worldwide in a year.

This year Ronaldo Schemidt from Agence France-Presse was awarded the World Press Photo of the Year. Schemidt captured the tense moment that one of the protesters catches fire amid violent clashes with riot police during a protest against President Nicolás Maduro, in Caracas, Venezuela. Other photos include civilians embroiled in the battle to recapture Mosul from ISIS in Iraq, teenage girls’ portraits after surviving being kidnapped and strapped suicide bombs by Boko Haram in Nigeria, and animals in danger from poachers in South Africa.
