Chiyoji Yazaki
Introducing works by the Yokosuka native Chiyoji Yazaki (1872–1947), creator of vibrant paste pictures inspired by trips around the world. Yazaki studied Western art under Seiki Kuroda at Tokyo University of the Arts, travelled to the U.S. as a chairman on the World’s Fair committee, and also toured Europe. Around 1918 he shifted from oil painting and to pastels, depicting a wide array of places in Japan and abroad in these works. He participated in the founding of the Nihon Pastel Gakai (Japan Pastel School) in 1927 and throughout his life taught and worked to promote this form of art. The Yokosuka Museum of Art has been introducing Yazaki’s work since it first held a retrospective for him in 1987. This exhibition draws on previous exhibitions while also displaying new research on Yazaki’s life and work as well as information on other artists with ties to Yokosuka.
