Wolfgang Staehle
Stuttgart-born New York-based artist Wolfgang Staehle is considered one of the pioneers of American net art. In 1991, Staehle started the BBS online forum The Thing, creating one of the first online spaces where artists and critics could gather. In 1996, with a project called “Empire 24/7”, he set up a camera in The Thing office that live-streamed the Empire State Building every four seconds. Staehle continued to create online streaming products and would become known for his video that captured the 2001 September World Trade Center attack as it happened. This time, Mr. Staehle has come to Japan for his exhibition “Catastrophe and the Power of Art” at the Mori Art Museum and will be giving a lecture at ICC where he will talk about video art, net art, and the potential of new media in general.
