Keith Haring
Like Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring is an artist who typifies American art of the 1980s. Thrust into the spotlight after his graffiti art known as the Subway Drawings covered up advertisements in New York subway stations, Haring left behind a broad spectrum of works from paintings and sculptures to animation and album covers which he created until he died in 1990 at the young age of 31. He produced over 100 pieces of the poster art for which he is known most particularly. These include commercial items for Absolut Vodka and Swatch as well as socially-conscious pieces promoting nuclear disarmament, AIDS prevention, and National Coming Out Day for the LGBT community. Under the motto “Art is for everyone,” he opened Pop Shop in New York in 1986 to sell original goods. This was followed by a shop in the Aoyama district of Tokyo in 1988. He became the topic of conversation with chalk drawing performances on the pedestrian promenades of Omotesando, where street performances were popular at the time. In this exhibit, we will be displaying for the first time in Tokyo about 70 items including house music and punk rock music album covers, and original posters belonging to the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection. About 30 favorite photographs showing Haring’s drawing performances on the streets of Omotesando will also be shown for the first time anywhere. A booth reminiscent of the Pop Shop will offer goods for sale within the event space. The diverse lineup of items will reveal the visual message that Haring continued to communicate as a spokesman for society.
