Mayuko Wada’s approach so far has been to reexamine the fundamental nature of painting by “imbuing images with bodies,” thereby forging new territory that defies understanding within conventional notions of painting and sculpture. She has developed this unique stance gradually while never failing to offer visual surprises. While typically her art is highly contextual and seems to test the receptiveness of the viewer, Wada has also created several playfully masochistic works that have not taken center stage until now. This solo exhibition focuses on her behind-the-scenes process, looking at her ideas from a different angle.
