Match: As a Magical Fire Starting Tool and as a Modern Label

Tobacco & Salt Museum
Finished
Between 1890–1910, Japan was the world’s leading exporter of matches. Japanese companies attempted to imitate Western company’s matchboxes during this time while also adding original designs that featured traditional Japanese motifs. Collecting these matchboxes became a popular craze. This exhibition traces transformations in the culture of matches and smoking through objects, artworks, documents, and photographs. It offers a look at the workings of domestic match producers and includes displays of exported matchbox labels from the Taisho era and those used in ads in the early Showa period.
