This exhibition, showcasing nine works on paper, will be the 4th solo exhibition of works by Akiko Mashima at the gallery. Mashima (b.1952) graduated from Musashino Art University in 1976. She moved to the US in 1978 and attended the Brooklyn Museum Art School and the Art Students League of New York. Mashima lived and worked in New York for nearly 30 years. She received the Robert Smithson Memorial Scholarship. In 1988, she was awarded the Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant. Mashima has had six solo exhibitions at OK Harris Works of Art. In 2012 her first book, “A Long Way to Good Fortune: Two Japanese Artists in New York” about her life in NY with artist Yoshishige Furukawa was published. Mashima currently lives and works in Sagamihara, Japan. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Robert Henry Contemporary (2018) and Maus Contemporary (2017). A two-person exhibition with Yoshishige Furukawa is currently being held at Sagamihara Citizen’s Art Gallery until March 24.
