Depicting raw eggs, crisp salads, chocolate sundays, and other foods with a realness that rivals photographs, 91-year-old oil painter Kaoru Ueda is one of Japan’s leading Hyper-Realists. A 1954 graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts Oil Painting Department, he began Realist painting in the 1970s, winning the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art Award and the Japan Art Festival Award in 1975. He worked as an art professor from 1985 to 1999. His works are held at art museums in Japan and abroad. This exhibition spotlights 30 paintings ranging from his early through recent works.
