Shoko Fujimori
Shoko Fujimori (b. Hokkaido in 1986) is a graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts. She has presented work at the Gunma Biennale for Young Artists (2010) and the Sompo Japan Art Award FACE Exhibition (2014).

Fujimori’s early works depict human figures with skins (more like thin membranes) so translucent that their inner organs and blood vessels are visible, demonstrating a kind of “severe reality.” She then moved away from these works, portraying subjects wearing fashions as a kind of “second skin.” Closer to mannequins than women, these figures give an inorganic impression. In the next stage of her work, Fujimori expanded her range of interest to people enveloped by mirrors, showroom windows, and other kinds of glass.

Considering fashion a means of communication with other people, Fujimori also keeps an eye on expanding virtual worlds such as social media and views these types of communication positively. At the same time, “covering” ourselves with such things makes us feel a kind of shallowness, yet when we look anew at our surroundings, we notice a glittering world close at hand. This exhibition demonstrates the sustained refinement of Fujimori’s work in its latest developments.
