Alfred William Parsons RA
Japan experienced a surge of Western culture during the Meiji era (1868–1912). The many travelers and artists who came to Japan during this time were struck by the country’s modest ways of life and beautiful landscapes, documenting these impressions in travel accounts and art. Many of these works are now finding their way back to Japan in recent years. At the same time, young artists in Japan were also creating marvelous works of art. This exhibition introduces the brilliance and beauty of the Meiji period with works by artists who traveled to Japan as well as Japanese artists.
