*The start of this exhibition has been delayed due to the museum’s temporary closing. (Original exhibition period: April 18–June 14).

Chofu resident Heiichi Nakagawa, who worked as a city elementary school teacher from 1964 to 2014, continues to paint the city in his trademark subdued colors. He can often be seen around town painting and has frequently appeared on TV.

In addition to Chofu’s famous places and events such as the Tama River, fireworks festivals, and Jindai Shrine, Nakagawa also depicts places deeply rooted in the lives of citizens, such as the “Octopus Park” and Tamagawa apartment complexes. Chofu’s cityscape has been changing dramatically in recent years with the construction of the subway, shopping centers, and sports facilities. As the times change, Nakagawa’s works preserve the landscapes the city is saying goodbye to.

Divided into the sections “Developing and Changing Places,” “Rest and Recreation,” and Chofu History and Culture,” this exhibition introduces around 100 works. Many of the depicted places are accompanied by maps. Take this show as an opportunity to reminisce while comparing Chofu’s past and present in art.
