Koyo Okada
Presenting the work of Koyo Okada (1895-1972; real name Kenjiro Okada), a photographer with ties to Musashino City who made photographing Mt. Fuji his life’s work. He was widely renowned as the “Mt. Fuji Photographer.” His work has appeared on stamps and has been the inspiration for artwork on currency. Okada lived in Musashino for a period of about ten years from 1961, and over the course of his life formed close relationships with leading artists of his day such as Ryushi Kawabata, Gyokudo Kawai, and Taikan Yokoyama. Undeveloped film discovered in his studio after his death presents a different side to his work in images of life around Musashino, including suburban sunsets and mornings at Inokashira pond. This exhibition presents 45 of Okada’s photographs held by Musashino City, along with a collection of photographs documenting the Great Kanto Earthquake and postcards he designed.
