Utsunomiya Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868–1944) created many distinctive woodcuts utilizing a variety of techniques. He was also a teacher of graphic design and woodblock printing in the Netherlands. His former pupils, including M.C. Escher, did everything in their power to protect the works left in Mesquita’s home after he and his family were captured by Nazis and sent to death camps. This is the first exhibition in Japan to explore Mesquita’s art in detail.
