Shonah Trescott
Born in Australia in 1982, Shonah Trescott received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in painting from the National Art School in Sydney. Working primarily in landscape painting, she has attracted significant attention with works that represent the primordial relationships between human beings and nature. Referencing different registers of visualizations from scientific data, regional research, and imagination, as well as memory tied to her personal narrative as an artist, she employs painting as a tool to explore the substance of nature, love, fear, and myth.
This exhibition, her first in four years, will feature her new “Land’s End” series. In the context of geophysics, “Land’s end” means the “extremity” of land bordering on sea or sky, or of sea bordering on sky. Trescott embarked on this series inspired by the unimaginable beauty and fragility of her native Australia. Residing at the One Tree Island Research Center on a tiny, pristine island on the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef, she undertook production while living with scientists studying climate change. She chose to engage with this island as a place beset by serious problems, both local and international, and as an opportunity to explore an unknown geographic region in connection with cutting-edge scientific research. Her paintings depicting the Murray River, stressed by drought in inland Australia, juxtapose human existence with human absence and reveal the harsh pressure exerted on the landscape by direct human influence and harmful industrial activities.
The paintings of Shonah Trescott are filled with silence. While stirring our thoughts about their spaces and landscapes, they convey something vast and substantial. Their impulses of light and darkness are depicted as windows on the better road we seek in a rapidly changing world, and they awaken endless opportunities in emotions, sensations, and mental states. We invite you to experience 24 new works by Shonah Trescott painted in oil on canvas.
