Ichinen Somiya
Ichinen Somiya (1893–1994) was a painter known for his participation in the Nika Art Exhibition and the Dokuritsu Exhibition. Living until age 101, he spent roughly half a century in Shizuoka Prefecture. Scenes stripped to their bare elements with bold lines are characteristic of his work. Mt. Fuji often appeared as a motif in his paintings, but very few of these works remain. This exhibition features all eleven of Somiya’s works in its collection, including his “Shushi Seibutsu” (Still Life with Seeds) displayed in the 1935 Dokuritsu Exhibition. Works by contemporaries such as Yuzo Saeki, Zenzaburo Kojima, Katsuzo Satomi, and Toshi Shimizu give a fuller picture of the era in which Somiya lived and worked.
