Noriko Shibuya
1978-1982 Photographing the youth gathered at Harajuku’s pedestrian zone.
The so-called Takenoko Tribe and the rockin’ rollers appeared in 1979. Shooting them drew me in each time I clicked the shutter. I was attracted to the energy of the youth. At the peak, 7000 Takenoko Tribe and the rockin’ rollers would gather, attracting a crowd of another 10,000 people. Boomboxes played rock and disco music. The youth would dance without a care. They were competing to see who could stand out the most. Yoyogi Park was full of energy.
Might we see a little bit of “now” in the youth of 40 years prior?
