Dan Isomura
Dan Isomura has been named in the Forbes Japan “30 Under 30 Japan 2019” and received a New York fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council last year. This exhibition, along with a show at Ginza Tsutaya, is his first since returning to Japan. For his 2016 series “Hell Statues of the Dead,” Isomura conducted research in Thailand about concrete sculptures as a form of contemporary Buddhist art based on local culture and society and created works of “simulation art” that questioned dualistic concepts of the minority and majority and heaven and hell. In New York, he contemplated how Asian art history, religious expression, and folk art differ from Western art contexts and created new sculptures and installations updated with fresh perspectives on Asian identity influenced by Buddhist art. These works are on display.
