Wolfgang Tillmans
Wolfgang Tillmans, who had to give up plans to come to Japan amid the COVID-19 pandemic, asks us from beyond the sea, in the form of his exhibition title: How does it feel? Six years after Affinity, his last solo show at Wako Works of Art, the new title shows a concern with others that has only increased in our current era when interpersonal connections are so obstructed, embodying the artist’s essence: openness, never retreating into his own shell, constantly seeking to connect with others, treating people and their perspectives as precious fuel for his creative production. This openness relates directly to the appeal of the work, and Tillmans’s photographs are never sealed off inside rectangular borders but have the power to direct the viewer’s consciousness to what lies beyond these borders, the vast world that we all inhabit.

The centerpiece of How does it feel? are new and older photographs from various different points in the artist’s career, juxtaposed with pages from magazines, their much smaller size and contents differing from those of the photographs so as to give the overall show a nimble rhythm. The photographs are of diverse sizes, some C-prints and some inkjet prints, some framed and some unframed. They also vary widely in terms of genre, including portraits and self-portraits, landscapes, abstractions, and still lifes, and while each shot appears to be an ordinary scene from everyday life, everything is suffused with mysterious luminosity that resists verbal analysis.
