Yasuhiro Ishimoto
Halloween has been a national folk event in the U.S. since the 20th century, when children dressed up in costumes and went from house to house at dusk on October 31 to receive candy in exchange for not causing any mischief. In Chicago, where Yasuhiro Ishimoto lived from the 1940s to the 1960s, children of various ethnic backgrounds dressed up in their favorite costumes and went out into the streets.

When he was a student at the Institute of Design and later when he returned to the U.S., Ishimoto took many photographs of children standing in the dark in suspicious Halloween costumes. Wearing handmade costumes and masks and painting their faces to transform into witches and ghosts, these children were attractive to photographers looking for subjects on the street.

By using the latest single-lens reflex cameras and high-performance lenses of the time, the photographs of 1959-61 succeeded in capturing the children at close range, even in dimly-lit conditions. In particular, his series of close-ups of the costumed “faces” of the children are impressive for their lively expressions. It can be said that the surprise of the unknown vision obtained by Ishimoto’s new equipment and the festive exuberance of Halloween are one and the same.
This exhibition brings together a series of photographs of Halloween in Chicago, including some that have rarely been shown.
