Kimiyo Mishima
The highlight of the exhibition will be a series of unpublished paintings from the 1950s and 1960s. As Kimiyo Mishima said in an interview with Hans Ulrich Obrist, he began to draw when he was at university. Mishima, who also studied Japanese dance at that time, found it annoying that the dance is performed according to a set pattern and no free choreography is allowed. On the other hand, his art teacher at the higher education level told him to “paint what you like” and he devoted himself to painting, which allowed him to “do what you like”.

‘Untitled’, created in 1957, is Mishima’s earliest work. The rough surface of the oil painting is a valuable element of his early paintings. Works 64-III and II are representative of Mishima’s flat-surface works in which newspapers and magazines are pasted onto the painted surface in dark tones. The collages of newspapers, especially in the former, seem to embody what Mishima calls “the fear of information”, as the interwoven texts on the canvas suddenly start to display large volumes of obscure information.

The two works, “Work 68-A” and “Work 68-B”, both of which were previously exhibited under their own names, are a pair with the same structure. In this case, the huge central surface of the painting is the main visual element.
