Ukiyo-e is now loved around the world as one of Japan’s representative art forms. With the keywords of “Uru (sell),” “Tsukuru (make),” and “Miru (see),” this exhibition introduces how ukiyo-e, which were sold at ezoshiya (picture book shops) in towns during the Edo and Meiji periods, were loved by people as a small entertainment item and as a valuable source of information for daily life.

This exhibition features more than 150 ukiyo-e prints (*1) from the collection of the Mitani family of Kinokuniya, a designated cultural property of Chiyoda Ward. The Mitani family had been a hardware wholesaler in Kanda Nurishicho (currently Kajicho 2-chome, Chiyoda-ku) since its establishment in 1660. In the late Edo period, during the reign of the eighth head of the family, Chozaburo (1819-1886), the family became a patron of Ukiyo-e artists and became involved in their production. Based on valuable materials delivered to the Mitani family, including drafts of works by Toyokuni the 3rd and Kuniyoshi, this exhibition will take a closer look at the behind-the-scenes production of Ukiyo-e, which is not usually revealed.
