Keith Haring
Keith Haring rose to fame in the early 1980s with his “Subway Drawings,” in which he drew with chalk on empty advertising spaces in the New York subway system. Before his first solo exhibition in 1981, he curated and held exhibitions in clubs, theaters, and other venues. He was selected for major international exhibitions such as Documenta 7 (1982) and the Venice Biennale (1984), establishing his position as an artist. In 1990, due to complications from AIDS, he died at the age of 31, but 30 years after his death, his popularity has not diminished. His works are simple and cheerful, but they also contain many issues such as support for children, anti-war and anti-nuclear, anti-discrimination against race and sexuality, and activism related to HIV and AIDS. In addition, with his deep insight into art history and strong interest in technology, he portrayed the world with an eye that was not bound by spatial or temporal axes.
The highlight of this exhibition is the sculpture Untitled (Man Balancing on Dog) (1989). Hering’s sculptures are typically vivid, eye-catching figures made up of flat shapes that look as if they have jumped out of two dimensions, but in this work, the raw aluminum material gives off an austere glow.
In addition, a series of photographs taken by artist and art journalist Makoto Murata during his close observation of Haring in New York from December 1982 to January of the following year will be shown for the first time in this exhibition. Other works on display include Untitled (KH.200) (1982), a painting on waterproof cloth, “My Town,” a mural painted with approximately 500 children in Tama City, Tokyo, and “Peace I-IV” (1987), both from the Tama City Cultural Promotion Foundation, as well as six new works created in Amsterdam that have been added to the museum’s collection.” Bad Boys” (1986), a series of six prints made in Amsterdam and newly added to the museum collection, will also be on display.
This exhibition reconsiders Haring’s multifaceted artistry and deep message to society from a 360° angle.
