First joining the Jiro Yoshihara-led Gutai Art Association in 1955, Sadamasa Motonaga (1922-2011) took part in a historic movement and went on to experiment in all kinds of expressions, spurned on by Yoshihara’s words. From colored water-filled vinyl to straw-blown paintings to even techniques of nihonga, Motonaga continued to move from one innovation to the next, emerging as an acclaimed artist of the art informel genre and coming to produce numerous prints and silk screen works from the 1970s onwards, becoming the first avant-garde artist to receive the Japanese government’s Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon in 1991. He also illustrated poet Shuntaro Hasegawa’s picture book “Mokomoko” (Thick and Soft). This exhibition marking the tenth anniversary of Motonaga’s death centers on 26 prints from Gendai Hanga Center that demonstrate the artist’s wit and sense for color and gradation.
