Harumi Watanabe “Root”

Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho
Finished

Artists

Harumi Watanabe
The “sun” gave birth to plants and animals on the earth. Plants take root in the earth to face the sun’s rays, and animals take nourishment from these plants to grow and leave offspring. It is a life of communal coexistence that animals and plants carry out on the earth under our respective roles. In recent years, stone sculptor Harumi Watanabe has been creating works titled “root,” which means the root of plants and the source of life for animals. The root absorbs nutrients from the earth and grows, extending its stem toward the sun. Eventually, flowers bear fruit, which people eat to sustain their lives.

Watanabe created this work of vegetables growing toward the sun, with a sense of praise and respect for the plants that benefit from the sun, are the source of energy for humanity, and pass on their lives to the next generation through the threatening vitality of their strong roots. Watanabe’s works are expressed with “stone”, a material that embraces life in another form, time, and has a unique presence that is enhanced by the combination of color and metal.
