The Joy of the Demitasse Cup

The Shoto Museum of Art
Finished
A “demitasse” is a small cup for drinking strong coffee. A variety of demitasse designs emerged as coffee culture permeated Europe in the 19th century.

This exhibition introduces about 380 pieces carefully selected from the Kazumi Murakami Collection of over 2,000 demitasses, focusing on those with designs that incorporate Japonisme, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco influences. Some reflect the fashions of the time, while others showcase delicate ornamentation that can be described as “superb craftsmanship”; still others feature a variety of elaborate designs. Enjoy the beauty of these designs squeezed onto tiny cups.
