The second exhibition by an art collector, Okuni Collection “Trip Hop”, will focus on contemporary Japanese art from the collection of Koji Okuni.

Trip hop is a music genre that emerged in Bristol, England in the 1990s. It is characterized by a somewhat dark and subdued sound that combines elements of hip-hop, such as rapping and looping beats, with soul and funk singing, electronic sounds, and strings.

From the collection of art collector Koji Okuni, this exhibition focuses on works by Japanese artists with strong ties to fashion and culture, such as Takahiro Komuro, who creates wooden sculptures with animated motifs, Takaoka Obata, who expresses breakdance in sculpture and two-dimensional forms, and Haute Moai, who paints highly anonymous paintings. These works will be exhibited in the exhibition.

These works share characteristics with the sound of music, especially trip hop, which Okuni describes as the music of his youth and the catalyst for his interest in art and culture. The strangeness of the eerie toys and faceless figures, and the sense of dancing by breaking up existing rhythms, are visualized in each piece and can be said to be a collection that reflects Okuni’s musical interests. Even though it is difficult to see the connection between each piece, they all have a single meaning depending on the collector’s interest and concern.
