The exhibition will include the early works of Yuki Kobayashi from 2012, ‘New Gender Bending Strawberry’ (2012-) series, a multimedia performance-based series, and the “Life of Athletics” (2014-) series, which reexamines the fundamental aspects of the construction of gender by using sports, which pursue human physicality to its limits, as materials. The exhibition will feature 17 video works from Kobayashi’s early works to his latest works, including “I or Another” (2021), which attempts to neutralize gender from the perspective of risk and social responsibility, such as the visibility of masculinity, violence, and the superiority of the majority.
Throughout his activities and works, Kobayashi has been questioning all the norms of the times and attempting to cut into issues of gender, race, disability, and nationality from the perspective of discrimination, stereotypes, and the sense of discomfort and preconceptions glimpsed in everyday life.
