Shinnosuke Yoshida
The early works of award-winning painter Shinnosuke Yoshida (b. 1983) are characterized by artificial constructions such as dams and barriers in anonymous, abstract images displaying a trust and respect for human behavior in such landscapes. After the Great East Japan Earthquake, however, his thoughts seem to change, and he portrays artificial subjects in destruction and chaos amid nature. Fear of the invisibility of radiation and a mistrust of information after the nuclear accident have also altered his daily landscapes. After the disaster, images from media have overlapped with what he sees before his eyes and concrete and abstract motifs also seem to merge as his perceptions of reality are upended. In this era of the pandemic, social distancing, and online communication, he continues to sense what he can from this environment and seek out the unchanging.
