Namika Nakai
At the newly opened Shirakami, located in a quiet residential area in Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, a special exhibition by ceramic artist Namihana Nakai will be held as the opening exhibition from September 4. The clay is thinly stretched by hand twisting, with a minimal border between the inside and outside. On the surface, like a stratum, the environment and the process of molding appear as traces.

The core of this exhibition, a series of works called “Portrait̶ayakatte-,” has a decadent beauty like a decaying building and fills the space with an overwhelming sense of presence. In contrast to the sophistication and sturdiness pursued in ceramics, the distortions and cracks in Nakai’s work are rough and strong, and at the same time, they seem to quietly appeal to the viewer as a form of delicate beauty.
