Shinya Imanishi “Caw Wac Caw”

Shinya Imanishi paints with thick layers of oil paint on canvas, leaving strong traces of his brushstrokes and repeated acts of scraping. He chooses motifs that evoke change, disappearance, and decadence, as well as rebirth, revival, and recovery, showing that death (the end) and life (the beginning) are two sides of the same coin.
The title of this exhibition, “Caw Wac Caw” is an onomatopoeic expression that translates the crow’s cry into words. The Muromachi-era Zen monk Sojun Ikkyu (Ikkyu-san), whose stories are still told today, is said to have reached enlightenment when he heard the cries of crows while sitting in meditation one summer night. At that time, he said, “Even though crows cannot be seen, they certainly exist, and we cannot see them because we try to see them. The same is true of the Buddha…” Imanishi had read that Ikkyu had left these words behind, and he remembered that this was one of the things he wanted to paint, which is why he chose this title. Imanishi, who sympathized with Ikkyu-san’s way of perceiving Zen and things as described in the book, tries to cut out and visualize phenomena, events, and relationships that cannot be seen or are overlooked, things and colors that change with the changing light, transience, and nature, and represent them in his paintings.
This exhibition will feature recent and new work, including a large work created especially for this exhibition, as well as the work that won the Grand Prix at the Shell Art Prize 2020.
