Artists

Norio Ueno
Norio Ueno (1932–2021) is known for his unique paintings featuring blue-grey bases scattered with floating lines, symbols, and letters. Born in Teshio, Hokkaido, he moved to Sapporo at age five and to Tokyo at age 19 with the intention of becoming an artist. His first year in Tokyo his work was selected for the Jiyu Bijutsu Art Exhibition. In the 1990s, he demonstrated a fierce originality with works such as “Tane to Wakusei” (Seeds and Planets), and in the 2000s he embarked on new projects boldly using vivid primary colors in addition to his blue grey-based works. This exhibition surveys Ueno’s career of more than 50 years, presenting around 60 of his works from early pieces to the “Taiki/Shindo” (Atmosphere/Vibration) and “In Flood” series, as well as ongoing oil painting and watercolor projects.
