Artists

Taiji Kiyokawa
Taiji Kiyokawa (1919-2000) was a painter who lived for a long time in Seijo, Setagaya-ku. He aimed for a unique abstract expression that was not limited to figurative forms, and explored beauty through the composition of color, line, and form.

Before he began his career as a painter, Kiyokawa was a student at the Faculty of Economics at Keio University, where he was a member of the photography club and devoted himself to the study of photography. As a student, he owned a Leica and other cameras and took many black and white photographs.

This exhibition introduces Kiyokawa’s photographs of seascapes and rivers in Japan, as well as people spending time by the water. Although these photographs were taken by an amateur photographer, they are beautifully composed and effectively capture the shadows and sunlight shining on the water.
