åbäke and LPPL
Based in London, the Graphic Design Studio åbäke exhibited “Fugu Okulu” at the 4th Istanbul Design Biennal “A School of Schools” in 2018. This project took off in 2013, when fugu mysteriously appeared at the Turkish Mediterranean coast, and it suggests researching and learning through various fields, from environmental issues, geopolitics, to contemporary art. Through a sequence of explorative research with fugu as it’s starting point, experimental, collaborative and participatory ‘research’ hints not only on the knowledge as a result through art and design, but also the authoritative and ethical structure between the individual, society and nature, based on this situation.

In this exhibition, graffiti spotted around Istanbul, fugu, which was immediately branded in the society as an alien specie and a hostile being, tied up along with artist’s favorite star’s poster with graffiti over it, an urushi laquerwork using stuffed fugu, artwork using fishing gear equipment sold on Galata Bridge in Istanbul, a sculpture made in collaboration with Max Lamb as an exchange of the author’s contributed text, a storyline of a fugu traveling from Japan to Europe as a base will be exhibited. Along with this, bottles of HP sauce and Bull-Dog sauce casted from Thames river sand and blown glass by the Sweden-based glass artist (Yoko Andersson Yamano) will also be exhibited. “Fugu Okul” and “Fugu School” is an interdisciplinary and progressive approach to understanding and deepening conversation between people based on associations and interests in this period of time, divided by various elements such as language and borders, politics and religion.
