Ryuichi Ohira
Ryuichi Ohira was born in 1982 in Tokyo, raised in Chiba, and received his Ph.D. from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2011. In addition to his solo exhibition “Boken Yaro” (2012) at Tsuruoka Art Forum in Yamagata Prefecture, and the exhibition and dedication of the large-scale sculpture “Tongarimaru” at the “Yorishiro Project” held at Kamigamo Shrine, a World Heritage Site (2013), he has also had solo exhibitions “Spectacular View” (Nanzuka, 2014), “Ryuichi Ohira (Galerie Vera Munro, Hamburg, 2015), the group exhibition “JP Pop Underground” (Shinsaibashi Parco Event Hall, Osaka, 2020), and many other exhibitions and projects.

Ohira’s black is created by carbonizing wood. The color of the material undergoes a chemical reaction under the influence of the flames and changes to jet black, a method of expression that can only be expressed with wood. Also, as an avid car enthusiast himself, Ohira’s work delves into Japan’s modified car culture, which is already becoming a legacy of the past. In recent years, there has been a reevaluation of the so-called “custom culture,” where old cars are modified to make them cooler and less valuable, and Ohira depicts some aspects of this culture in a comical way. In addition, Ohira continues to express things that illuminate the darkness of human society, such as yokai, demons, and mythical creatures that have been handed down from generation to generation in Japan.

In this exhibition, Ohira will present a new series of relief paintings carved out of wood, as well as vases carved out of camphor and zelkova logs, and wood sculptures representing demon girls. In the Corona disaster, Ohira unraveled the history of art in which pathogens and viruses have been depicted as personified demons, and finished the work with spellbinding expressions and details such as parts used in old Buddhist statues and jewel beetle wings.
