Artists

Suekichi Akaba
Suekichi Akaba said, “I want to pass on to the next generation of children the beauty of old traditional Japanese art with a modern interpretation.” His first picture book, ‘Kasajizo,’ was drawn in ink, and the following year, ‘Daiku to Oniroku’ was drawn in the Yamato-e style. He also incorporated his own interpretation of the expressions of picture scrolls, Nara-ehon, and Tanryokubon, which can be said to be the origin of narrative painting, into his picture books. This exhibition explores the appeal of Akaba’s picture books, which can be regarded as a gateway to Japanese art open to children.
