The Gunma Biennale for Young Artists is a nationwide open call exhibition for young people between the ages of 16 and 30. This year, the 15th edition, we received 459 entries from 318 groups (321 people), of which 50 were selected by 50 artists. Of these, 50 were selected by 50 artists. As a result of the judging held recently, a total of eight pieces were awarded: one Grand Prize, one Excellence Prize, five Encouragement Prizes, and one Gateau Festa Harada Prize.

The Grand Prize winner, Chiaki Yamamoto’s “One for coming days,” is an installation work using video and diary, documenting the artist’s project to travel on foot from Gunma Prefecture to Fukuoka Prefecture with a 12-foot (approx. 3.6 m) piece of wood that was inconvenient to carry around. It is an installation work using video and diary. Unexpected events and various encounters along the way are recorded, but the journey was interrupted in Yamaguchi Prefecture due to COVID-19.
