Atelier21 is an atelier and a painting class studio, designed as a place to devote to one’s studies and stimulate each other. It was established by Kozo Ueda, Takahiro Okada and Minoru Hirota, who were classmates at Tokyo University of the Arts.
This exhibition started in 2012 and this year’s one will display croquis according to the time of their creation. Another three artists, friends of the members, will be joining the exhibition.

‘Croquis’ are type of drawings that are basic in studying art and art training, but in Atelier21 croquis too are viewed as independent works. For the members, croquis allow to put away the excessive information about subject and to create a composition from the most necessary elements only, while logically analyzing the following question - “How does the brain process information received by the five senses?”. Since croquis are drawn in a short amount time, it is possible to draw more than 100 of them in a day, yet among them only a few are the works in which the painter succeeds to grasp the moment and see the essence of the sitter.
