This solo exhibition presents the work of Taizo Kuroda, who was active worldwide in the expression of white porcelain sublimated into a pure form, and who passed away in April this year.
Kuroda was born in Shiga Prefecture in 1946 and moved to France when he was 20 years old. During his stay in Paris, he met Tatsuzo Shimaoka, which led him to pursue pottery making, and in the 1970s he made Canada his base of production. When he returned to Japan, he studied pottery under Shimaoka in Mashiko, where he also met Shoji Hamada. Kuroda’s experiences in Mashiko deeply influenced his spirit in the following years. After returning to Japan, he set up his own studio in Ito, Shizuoka in 1991, and at the age of 45, he decided on the theme of “wheel-thrown pottery, vessels, and monochromatic colors” as his production theme, and established his representative works of solid white porcelain.
This exhibition will trace the trajectory of Taizo Kuroda’s career through about 100 pieces of his representative white porcelain work as well as his older work. The work that he produced before white porcelain, such as ceramics made in Mashiko, colored porcelain, and ceramic dolls, are now very rare. This exhibition shows Kuroda’s work from the first half of his career, which are reminiscent of his mass-production style, to the more abstract white porcelain of his later years.
