This show is titled ‘Destroy All Monsters’ and consists of artworks by seven artists. Destroy All Monsters (1968) was originally a Japanese movie directed by Ishiro Honda, and its Japanese-language title was Kaiju-Soushingeki, meaning “Total Monster Attack.” In 1973, Mike Kelley, Jim Shaw, and their friends formed a rock band named after the movie, and some years later, Japanese apparel brand Hysteric Glamour used photos and images of the band in their clothing and marketing. Since then, the name became known in Japan again in the context of fashion. This exhibition attempts to search for the road to recovery from the blockage, division, and destruction of culture to the iteration and repetition of cultural imports and exports that have gone back and forth like a game of catch. The exhibition features Tomoko Arakawa, Ichiro Irie, Alejandro Garcia Contreras, Yoshinari Susaki, Ryohta Shimamoto, Yuka Nakajima, and Aiko Higuchi. The artists work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, photograph, video, and ceramics.
