Artists

Atsuo Suzuki
Born in Aichi prefecture in 1977, Atsuo Suzuki graduated from the Graduate School of Education, Shizuoka University in 2001. He is currently an artist based in his hometown of Toyohashi. He calls his work “carved painting” and has been creating various designs by carving out the layers of paint on the panel with a carving knife. Suzuki’s method is similar to carving lacquer, but the screen he creates is presented to the viewer as a vivid trace of the artist’s action, so vivid that even the artist’s breath can be felt, and at the same time, the fault lines in the paint made apparent by the repetitive act of “carving” tell the story of the vast amount of time the artist has spent confronting the work.

In his first solo exhibition at Tezukayama in 2019, he presented a large-scale exhibition including three large works, with the composition of the works limited to the three primary colors of color: red, blue, and yellow. By changing the way he carved with the sculptor’s knife, he created various different impressions, and viewers could see his overwhelming presence. This time, he plans to exhibit his works in monochrome black and white, which will give a completely different impression from the last time. Suzuki’s motivation to create is tremendous, and he is always seeking and challenging new images. In the past, he has used the same “carving” method to create three-dimensional work, but this time he is planning to create a new spatial composition that combines two and three-dimensional work. In addition, he will be exhibiting small two and three-dimensional work made from paint pieces scraped from the surface of the works.
