The Taisho Roman artist Yumeji Takehisa (1884–1934) was also known as a poet, writer, and designer of more than 300 books. The lyricism of his artwork is one of its major appeals. A desire to “create poems in the form of pictures” inspired him to become a poet. He published some 57 volumes of poetry and stories, including his major work “Yoimachigusa.” This exhibition presents examples of his paintings, poetry and writings, book designs, and other works exploring the literary quality of his output and his relationship with literature.
