Meriyasu Kataoka
Meriyasu Kataoka continues to create works with a variety of expressions by combining various materials, such as toys, wood, machines, and ceramics, with a focus on stuffed animal works using fabrics. In addition to stuffed animals, she develops a wide range of activities, including puppet shows staged by the artist herself, drawings, sculptures, and collaborations with artists from different genres. Her soft, fluffy works with gentle and cute expressions each have their own unique personalities, and evoke a strong will, with warmth and vitality as if they were alive. It is as if the joy of playing and dreaming, which we have somehow forgotten as we have become adults, is evoked as a nostalgic feeling by the works brought to life. These works go beyond the concept of “stuffed animals” and appeal to our own interests and attachment to things, which have changed over the generations, and give us the opportunity to look again at forgotten feelings and cherished times.

In this exhibition, Kataoka focused on the concept of “≠”, which means “not the same”. The exhibition consists only of works created with the motif of a creatures that can be perceived as anything, sizes which she has often used in her works, and expressions typical of her, which can be perceived as various emotions such as joy, anger, sorrow, pleasure and various emotions like a delicate nothingness. The works will be exhibited both in a gallery and online, and will be sold to the world in a silent auction format in an attempt to present the works in an unprecedented way. A total of about 20 three-dimensional works will be exhibited and presented in the gallery and online.
