Heinosuke Gosho
Heinosuke Gosho (1902-1981) made his directorial debut at Shochiku Kamata in 1925 and was active in establishing the “Kamata style” with Yasujiro Shimazu, Takahiko Ushihara, and Yasujiro Ozu by making many home dramas.
In 1931 Gosho created Japan’s first full-feature talkie “The Neighbor’s Wife and Mine”. After the war, he had a hit with “Once More” (1947) at Toho, and “Where Chimneys Are Seen” (1953) at Studio Eight Productions, which Gosho founded himself, was highly acclaimed at the Berlin International Film Festival. He continued to make excellent women’s films at Kabuki-za Productions and Shochiku. He left behind many masterpieces full of lyricism that look at the contradictions and conflicts of life, scooping up emotions through detailed depictions of everyday life. He also took on the challenge of capturing the extreme emotions that lurk in ordinary scenes.
This special feature screen 36 carefully selected films by the director, including work acquired after the 1974 retrospective at the former Film Center, ranging from rare surviving work from the pre-war and mid-war periods to ambitious work from his later years, as well as three films that capture Gosho’s image (33 programs in total).
