Igyo: Tokuro & Takahiro Kato

Shibuya Kurodatoen
Finished

Artists

Tokuro Kato, Takahiro Kato
Platter works called Igyo were made in very limited numbers from 1965 to 1968. Igyo means “something different in shape and atmosphere.” These ceramics use traditional Shino, Oribe, Setoguro, and ash glazes.

Takahiro Kato, grandson of Tokuro Kato, was born in 1972 and left Japan for a journey when he was 22 years old, traveling to Xian and Dunhuang in China, then to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, through Europe and finally to Spain, where he stayed in Granada. In 1999, at the age of 27, he made his debut in Nagoya with his first solo exhibition, entitled “Inori in a Bowl.” Takahiro, who has always been in the limelight of his well-known grandfather, is about to turn 50. He has his own unique approach to Igyo pottery.
