Seitei Watanabe
This is the first exhibition to introduce the entire career of Seitei Watanabe (1852-1918), a Japanese painter active in the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Edo (present-day Tokyo) at the end of the Edo period, Watanabe became an apprentice to the history painter Kikuchi Yosai at the age of 16. At the age of 28, he became the first Japanese painter to go to France, where he interacted with the Impressionist painter Degas, exhibited at the World Exposition, and had a solo exhibition in England. Watanabe established himself in Japan with his flower-and-bird paintings based on his excellent painting skills and precise realistic expression, but in later years he left the art world to pursue his own style and passed away at the age of 68.
Since Watanabe’s death, there has been no retrospective exhibition of his work, and he has been a well-known figure in the art world, but now that there is growing momentum to reevaluate his work, about 100 masterpieces, mainly from overseas and private collections, will be gathered in one place.
