Voice Over

Shiga Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Yuichiro Tamura, Mien Nakao, Dot Architects et al.
This exhibition, set in a circular museum setting, presents more than 100 works selected from the approximately 1,800 items in the collection of the Shiga Museum of Art, regardless of genre or age.

Looking closely at a work of art is similar to listening to the “voice” of the work. If one listens carefully, one may hear unexpected connections between the work. For example, a painting with a plainly drawn date and a ceramic work that looks like a living thing with thorns. A landscape of Omi in the Muromachi period and a paradise in Oceania. In this way, the museum will connect four collections that have rarely been displayed in the same room at the museum - modern Japanese painting, local art, contemporary art, and Art Brut - by listening to their “voices.

In addition, the three guest artists invited to this exhibition will lightly demonstrate that everyone has their own way of listening to voices. Yuichiro Tamura (1977-), who has developed a variety of methods of expression based on meticulous and bold search, creates his own interpretation of Andy Warhol’s works to reveal a possible image of the artist himself. Mien Nakao (1980-), who sheds light on the value of vanishing things through her work of “Utsurushi” (depicting), questions us about the meaning of preserving and remaining works of art under the theme of the painter Yuki Ogura, who is deeply involved with the establishment of the museum. Dot Architects, an architects’ unit, will present an unexpected view of the museum based on the records of the curators’ activities while the museum is closed.
