“Twelve Hawks” and Crafts in Modernizing Japan: Changing Phases from the 1870s to the Present

National Crafts Museum
Finished

Artists

Chokichi Suzuki, Otojiro Komai, Toshichi Iwata et al.
Crafts from the Meiji period (1868–1912) impress us with more passion than that of those from any other periods. Ceramics and metalworks with sculptural decorations that seem to jump out of the surface, animal ornaments showing realistic expressions as if they were alive—they capture and hold our attention. Japanese social structure underwent a dramatic shift in the Meiji period. Crafts from the era reflect artists’ desperate efforts to find a means of survival. In our own day, rapid digitization is causing major changes to our life. Informatization via the Internet and new digital devices are making tangible impact also on their techniques or ways of execution. How have they fought against social changes? This exhibition presents crafts dating from the Meiji period to the present to focus on their ever-changing efforts.
