Atsuo Suzuki participated in the exhibition “Proof of Painting” held by Gallery Yamaguchi Kunstbau in 2003, and since then he has been thinking about the question “What is painting? Suzuki’s own works, which are layered with colors and carved with a sculptor’s knife, have elements of three-dimensional sculptures even though they are two-dimensional.
The four artists participating in this exhibition are Yae Asano, Seiji Kunishima, Junji Yamada, and Atsuo Suzuki. With the evolution of technology and the overflow of information, various new ways of expressing art have emerged, but the act of drawing on a flat surface continues to be the mainstream. Even when looking back to the past, two-dimensional expression continues to have a strong presence despite the constant cries about the limitations of two dimensions. Not all of the works by the four artists in this exhibition are two-dimensional works, but viewers can explore the meaning of painting through Suzuki’s own interpretation. In addition, at the main gallery of Tezukayama Gallery, the second solo exhibition of Atsuo Suzuki will be held at the same time.
